Marek's Surgery

Well Marek had surgery to have his tonsils and adenoids removed. The surgery went well and he did a really good job. He was a little freaked out when he came out of the anesthesia. They apparently numb the throat up a lot, so when they wake up they don't feel like they can swallow at first and it is a strange feeling. He did a good job though and we were home by noon!

It turned out to be a crazy day for us with the surgery, no school for any of the kids, and a huge thunderstorm came through and a tornado was spotted in Mukwonago. Well a funnel cloud really. So we were all hanging out in the basement watching the weather reports and waiting to go back upstairs. Quite the exciting day for Marek.

His recovery has gone well and now (two weeks later) he is almost back to normal. The first week was the worst for the pain. He had to have pain medicine every 4 hours. So I was waking him up to give it to him so he wouldn't get too sore. Wow! I am not used to getting up in the middle of the night! That was the roughest part for mom! I knew when his throat was feeling better because he asked me not to come wake him up.

The only thing about the surgery is that his voice has changed a little. It is higher pitched and somewhat garbled, almost like he can't remember how to use his tongue. The Dr said this is very normal after the tonsils come out. He had some pretty large ones and with both the tonsils and adenoids gone it changes the anatomy of the throat and nose. It is like training your pallet all over again. He does have a bit of fluid in his ears that they are hoping will go away once the swelling is gone from the surgery. So we have to keep an eye or ear on his speech over the next little while. Over all a successful operation, now we watch his speech, oh and we do need to get his hearing checked as a precaution.
